PROLOGUE
Grouse Hall (GH) is a private organization founded to promote, enhance, and enjoy the game of sporting clays using vintage firearms and carried out in the spirit of Edwardian-era sportsmen.
Sporting clays originated in England in the early 1900’s as a means of practice and preparation for live bird hunting. As such, it is a close match to actual field hunting conditions. It has developed into an activity on its own, and became a companion to trap and skeet shooting for both pleasure and competitive games. In 1980, sporting clays was introduced in America where it has had a popular and growing following.
Unlike in trap and skeet, sporting clays courses are all different in their presentation of targets which makes for interesting and challenging presentation of clay birds. No two courses have the same layout for launching target birds and this characteristic has led to the use of the term “golf with a shotgun” to reflect the similarity to golf course variations.
The GH tradition is to enjoy the sport using fine vintage firearms, exclusively side-by-side shotguns, and further to participate in the shoot wearing traditional Edwardian-era dress. Weather conditions permitting, GH members can be seen wearing breeks with knee-length socks banded by colorful garters. Shirts and ties are required dress for most events. The stylishly adventurous shooter will also don a shooting vest or coat made from fine wool with subtle weave patterns in various nature-like hues. A driving-style cap or fedora ‘tops’ off the outfit, and offers some protection from the weather.
Aside from the period dress and firearm considerations, the main benefit of GH membership is the close fellowship developed and promoted by the organization. Friendships are formed and last.
GH holds regular (monthly) all-day events that include meals and targets, mainly at ranges in Pennsylvania. Some shoots end with a dinner-time social event where members can relax and exchange comments on their shooting skills to fellow gunners. However, range scores are not tabulated which is consistent with the organization’s philosophy that the purpose of the shoot is fun, not competition.
New members are always welcome to attend an event on a trial basis and sample the unique experience of GH-sponsored clays shooting. Spouses and friends are also welcome. Membership in GHSS is currently $60 per year. Individual event costs (targets and meals) are extra and vary according to the venue.
Grouse Hall offers members a unique venue for participating in an enjoyable pass time that combines sportsmanship with a sense of history dating to times when gentlemen and gentlewomen were pioneers of the sport.
